Project Resonance was developed to validate our fin flutter approximation tool for our rocket Reign in preparation for the Spaceport America Cup competition. Resonance features a removable fin can system, allowing custom fins to be swapped to produce varying safety factors against fin flutter. Additionally, we plan to mount cameras to capture the onset of fin flutter in real-time during flight.
Resonance flies on a variety of H-class 29mm motors, enabling rapid testing of different flight configurations without the added cost of hazmat shipping for each motor. While Resonance uses birch plywood fins and Reign will be equipped with G10 fiberglass panels, our goal is to demonstrate that our fin flutter tool can accurately simulate expected flutter velocities. This will allow us to move forward with further validation testing for Reign.
Future validation tests may include scaled wind tunnel experiments or Reign's first flight test.
