PROPEL 1
PROPEL 1
The Project for Rocketry Outreach Practice and Education in Level 1 was designed to educate students on HPR Level 1 certifications through the National Association of Rocketry. The team aimed to replicate the student experience by purchasing a rocket kit and encouraging students to participate in the construction of the rocket. To further enhance their learning, the officer team held weekly sessions where students could come and learn about modeling and simulating rocket designs. These sessions primarily focused on using OpenRocket, a software tool that allowed students to accurately model and simulate expected rocket performance, providing them with a solid foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of rocketry.
Results
Overall, PROPEL 1 was highly successful in demonstrating the build process to many of our student members. The hands-on experience with simulation and design bolstered their technical confidence, leading to successful Level 1 certifications on the day of the launch. Despite a hardware issue where the deployment charge failed to release the parachute at apogee, the project was invaluable in educating students on high-power rocketry certifications. Looking ahead, we plan to continue this project line with PROPEL 2, where we will teach students about electronic deployments and integrating avionics systems.
