Rocketry for All
One of ODRC's main pillars is outreach: to local k-12 students, members of ODU's community, and beyond. We can be found tabling at every club fair (it's hard to miss us with the 9-foot rockets!) but we aspire to go a step beyond. Below is a list of our community engagement events throughout the years.
10/4/25 - We annually table at STEM Fest at the TCC Joint Use Library, where we help public school k-12 students engage with opportunities in science. We also participate a 5-person student panel, where college students answer questions and offer advice for STEM-curious students.
9/9/25 - In collaboration with AIAA, we helped trailblaze the first ever Aerospace Day event at ODU. Setting up a display in front of ODU's Webb Center, we taught students about opportunities in amateur rocketry, presented our club's mission and projects, and ran a hands-on composites demo where students created a forged carbon fiber fin.
3/22/25 - Girls from Virginia Beach's public school district toured ODU, rotating through several stations. Alongside ODU's Engineering Ambassadors, we ran a station where we taught them the basics of rocket flight, showed them opportunities in aerospace, and connected them to professional organizations that aligned with their aerospace interests.
11/2/2024 - The Old Dominion Rocketry Club volunteers annually at Military Aviation Day, partnering with the Southeast Virginia Rocketry Association (SEVRA) to inspire young women to pursue STEM careers. Through hands-on activities and engaging discussions, we introduce participants to rocketry and aerospace concepts, sparking their excitement for STEM fields.
June 2023 - Through our Aerospace Bootcamps, elementary and middle school students explored the fundamentals of rocketry, including aerodynamics, propulsion, and flight stability, in a hands-on environment. With guidance from our team, participants assembled low-power rockets and launched them at the Military Aviation Museum, experiencing the excitement of seeing their creations take flight. These workshops not only taught practical skills but also inspired curiosity and enthusiasm for aerospace and engineering careers.
